History and description
Considered one of the most important monuments in Trento, Buonconsiglio Castle was originally built in the 13th century as a watchtower. Between 1255 and 1803, it became the episcopal residence of the city’s highest religious authorities. During the Napoleonic era, it was converted into a military barracks, and after the annexation of Trentino to Italy, it was transformed into a public museum. The complex includes several areas: Castelvecchio and Torre Augusto, the oldest parts of the site; the Magno Palazzo, a key example of Italian Renaissance art thanks to its frescoes; Torre Aquila, famous for the Cycle of the Months; and the gardens.
Curiosities
Used as a military prison by the Austrians, the castle is also remembered as the site of the execution of Cesare Battisti. Today, it is often chosen as a filming location for movies and documentaries.
Access
Open from Tuesday to Sunday, with continuous hours from 9:30 am to 5:00 pm, the fortress can be visited at the cost of €10, with reductions and specific free entries available. Guided tours are recommended and require prior booking.
How to reach it
Located in the historic center of Trento, the castle can be reached by car via the A22 motorway (Brenner–Modena direction), by train on the Verona–Bolzano line to the central station followed by a short walk, or by bus from Piazza Dante.
Rich in history, art, and culture, Buonconsiglio Castle is one of Trento’s most fascinating monuments, offering visitors a vivid glimpse into the city’s religious and noble past.
