History and description
Dating back to the Bronze Age, when it was probably used by the Samnites as a lookout point, the castle was transformed in the 11th century by the Normans into a strategic stronghold. It later took its name from the d’Evoli family who, starting in 1362, renovated it and turned it into a noble residence with furnishings and decorations. Sold and later abandoned, today it is owned by the State, which has initiated a restoration project. Built on a rocky spur, the castle has a quadrangular layout characterized externally by crenellated towers and defensive walls, and internally by numerous halls and an 18th‑century staircase.
Curiosities
The site is linked to the legend of the fairy who, in order to escape the ius primae noctis, threw herself from the cliff now known as the “fairy’s corner.”
Access
Accessible only by reservation, the site offers free admission.
How to reach it
