The Carafa Castle dominates the historic center of Ferrazzano, overlooking the valley that embraces Campobasso and the Matese and Mainarde mountains. Thanks to its strategic location, Ferrazzano is known as the Sentinel of Molise, a natural observation point of extraordinary beauty.
The origins of the castle date back to the Norman era, around the year 1000, when the structure served a defensive purpose against enemy incursions. After the devastating earthquake of 1456, the fortress was rebuilt and transformed into a noble residence. Between 1494 and 1506, Gerolamo Carafa, a member of the noble Neapolitan Carafa family, oversaw its renovation, giving it the current appearance of a baronial palace.
The building, with an irregular polygonal layout, is perched on a hill that offers sweeping views of the entire valley. Today, visitors can still admire the two circular towers of different sizes, typical of medieval military architecture, adapted for the use of firearms. The entrance portal features an elegant stone balcony and asymmetrical windows, while inside are preserved rainwater cisterns, rooms once used as storerooms and stables, and a large noble hall.
Over the centuries, the castle has undergone various restorations, especially after the 1805 earthquake, yet it has retained its ancient charm. Today, it stands as a perfect fusion of medieval fortress and aristocratic residence.
The village of Ferrazzano, with around 3,000 inhabitants, is also known for its curious connection to Robert De Niro: the great-grandparents of the famous Hollywood actor were originally from this Molise village.
The castle has inspired folk legends and stories passed down through generations, tied to the noble families who lived there. On the entrance façade, visitors can still see heraldic coats of arms that tell the story of the Carafa family and Giovannella di Molise, wife of Gerolamo.
Today, Carafa Castle is privately owned, but it can be visited on special occasions or by staying in accommodation facilities located within the complex, bookable through major online platforms. The entire site has been protected as a cultural heritage site by the Italian Ministry of Cultural Heritage since 1981.
