History and description
Built in 1883 to celebrate the union of philanthropist Annibale Baraing and Delfina Bianco, Baraing Castle is a Neo‑Gothic style building with a quadrilateral layout. It is characterized by four towers with swallow‑tailed battlements, mullioned windows, glass conservatories, and gardens. Completed shortly before the philanthropist’s death, the castle was donated—through his wife’s will—to the Municipality of Point‑Saint‑Martin. It first became the town hall and today houses the offices of the Unité des Communes Valdôtaines Mont‑Rose.
Curiosities
The castle was conceived as a symbolic successor to the original castle of Point‑Saint‑Martin, but with a stronger focus on the community and the people. This is reflected in the many philanthropic actions of its owner, such as donating land for the construction of the elementary school.
Access
Open to the public free of charge as it currently serves as an office building, the castle is especially admired for its exterior, which makes it a highlight in local tourist itineraries.
How to reach it
The site can be reached by car via the A5 motorway towards Point‑Saint‑Martin and then Perloz, by train on the Turin–Aosta line, or by bus to Saint‑Martin. It is also accessible on foot from the town center.
Considered one of the rarest castles in the Aosta Valley due to its Neo‑Gothic style, Baraing Castle offers not only architectural beauty but also a spectacular view over the entire valley, making it an unmissable stop.
