Aragonese Castle – between history and panorama

Autore: Redazione 26/08/2025 10:08

History and description

Originally dating back to the Byzantine era, the site was built with a defensive role to protect the city’s port. Later, after passing under Byzantine and Norman control, it was transformed by Ferdinand I of Aragon, who enriched it with elements such as crenellated towers, a ravelin, and a moat. Eventually taken over by Garibaldi and later partially demolished to make way for urban planning, in 1897 it was declared a national monument in recognition of its cultural value. Unfortunately, it was damaged by the 1906 earthquake, which left intact only the Aragonese towers—today the historic symbol of the city. These cylindrical towers are built with different materials that reflect the site’s transformations, and each contains a central spiral staircase leading to five levels. Today, they stand in a green square that has been redeveloped with bergamot trees to highlight the monument’s beauty.

Curiosities

An ideal spot at sunset, the castle is surrounded by legends of ghosts said to inhabit it. The most famous is that of the White Lady, a young noblewoman who, after falling in love with a man of humble origins, was locked in the dungeons by her husband. There, she is said to have died of hunger or grief, leaving her spirit to wander the castle forever.

Access

The site is open daily with different visiting shifts. Admission costs €3, with a special reduction for residents.

How to reach it

Located just a few steps from the seafront and the train station, the castle is easily accessible by urban public transport or on foot.

A direct testimony to the city’s many dominations, the Aragonese Castle of Reggio Calabria is a must‑see destination for those wishing to explore the stages of history while enjoying an exceptional panoramic view.
