Aragonese Castle – between history and panorama

Autore: Redazione 02/08/2025 09:40

History and description

Dating back to the Byzantine era, the site was originally built with a defensive role to protect the city’s port. Later, after the rule of the Byzantines and Normans, it was transformed by Ferdinand I of Aragon, who enriched it with elements such as battlemented towers, the ravelin, and the moat. After passing into the hands of Garibaldi, it was later partially demolished to make way for urban planning. In 1897, recognizing its cultural value, it was declared a national monument, but unfortunately it was damaged by the 1906 earthquake, which left intact only the Aragonese towers—today a historic symbol of the city. These cylindrical towers feature masonry of different materials, testifying to their transformations, and a central spiral staircase leading to five levels each. Today, they stand in a green square that has been redeveloped with bergamot trees to highlight the beauty of the monument.

Curiosities

An ideal spot at sunset, the castle is associated with numerous ghost legends, the most famous being that of the White Lady. According to the tale, a young noblewoman, imprisoned by her husband for falling in love with a man of humble origins, died in the dungeons of hunger or grief, leaving her spirit to wander the castle.

Access

Open daily with varying hours, the site is accessible at the cost of €3, with a specific reduction for residents.

How to reach it

Located just a few steps from the seafront and the station, the castle is easily reachable by public transport or on foot.

A direct testimony of the city’s dominations, the Aragonese Castle of Reggio Calabria is a must-see destination for those wishing to explore the stages of its history while enjoying an exceptional panoramic view!
