History and description
Built in 1473 by order of Sigismondo Pandolfo Malatesta, lord of Rimini, the complex was conceived both as a residence and a fortress, incorporating pre‑existing structures and following the advice of Filippo Brunelleschi. It was developed as a fortified citadel, characterized by a moat, towers, windows, and drawbridges, and also included an entrance bearing the Malatesta coat of arms, an inner courtyard, the Palazzo di Isotta, and a keep.
Curiosities
The castle, built with an almost self‑celebratory intent, was constructed according to astrological calculations. Sigismondo, being highly superstitious, believed this would ensure the prosperity of the building.
Access
Now also home to the Fellini Museum, dedicated to the famous film director, the castle is open from Tuesday to Sunday, with hours varying by season. Admission costs €12, with free entry and specific reductions available.
How to reach it
Located in Piazza Malatesta, the fortress can be reached by car (parking in nearby areas), from the train station via Viale Monfalcone, by bus (lines 14 or 18), or on foot from the historic center.
With its imposing architecture and immersive atmosphere, Castel Sismondo offers visitors the chance to step into the life of one of the most important families of the Renaissance. It is an essential destination for lovers of history and culture.
