History and description
Built between 1899 and 1904 at the request of Queen Margherita of Savoy, who stayed there until 1925, the castle—clad in grey stone—features a rectangular core flanked by towers inspired by flowers, a tribute to the queen’s passion for botany. Its gardens, overlooking Monte Rosa, also introduce a well-known panoramic trail. Inside, the castle is divided into three floors according to function, all adorned with wooden ceilings and medieval-style furnishings. Among its notable rooms is the Romitaggio Carducci, where the famous Italian poet once stayed.
Curiosities
Although inhabited by the queen only for daily receptions, the castle has often been chosen as a film set thanks to its beauty. Its most peculiar feature is the kitchen, located separately from the main building, with dishes delivered to the dining hall through an underground rail system.
Access
Open daily except Mondays, with hours varying by season, the castle can be visited at the cost of €10, with free entry and specific reductions available. Guided tours can also be booked.
How to reach it
Located in Gressoney-Saint-Jean, the castle can be reached by car via the A5 motorway toward Pont-Saint-Martin and then following the signs to the town, by bus or train toward the site, or on foot along the panoramic trail.
Set in lush greenery with breathtaking views, Savoy Castle offers visitors a unique experience of history, nature, and charm, making it an unmissable destination.
