History and description
Built in 1237 by the Wangen brothers with the purpose of controlling trade routes, the castle later passed into the hands of various owners who turned it into a summer residence. It eventually became Habsburg property, undergoing both restoration and decline, which made it a symbol of Romanticism. In 1893, Emperor Franz Joseph donated it to the city of Bolzano, and it was officially opened to the public in the early 2000s. Perched on a rocky spur to fulfill its original defensive role, the castle is renowned for its numerous medieval secular frescoes as well as others depicting legendary scenes.
Curiosities
Nicknamed the Illustrated Manor thanks to its artistic treasures, the castle was also used as a film set for Pasolini’s The Decameron.
