Castel Pietra – a fortress blending with the rocky ground

Autore: Redazione 03/10/2025 10:16

History and description

Located on the slope of Castel Beseno hill and built upon a massive boulder detached from the Cengio Rosso (from which it takes its name), Castel Pietra dates back to the 13th century, when it depended on Castel Beseno under the rule of the Da Beseno family, serving a strategic defensive and garrison function. In later centuries, it became the scene of significant clashes, such as the famous Battle of Calliano on August 10, 1487, which saw Venetian troops and Tyrolean‑Trentino forces face each other near the castle and Beseno, as well as during the conflicts between French and Austrian troops in the Napoleonic wars.

Expanded and restored several times—hence its mixture of stylistic elements, with a predominance of Gothic features—the building includes numerous spaces such as the “Sala del Giudizio” (Hall of Judgment), frescoed between 1468 and 1478 with scenes of courtly life, hunts, and judicial games, illuminated by Gothic bifora windows; the hall of the men‑at‑arms; the hanging tower; the prisons; the patrol corridor running along the natural rock; and an Italian garden offering a panoramic view over the Adige plain. Today, the monument is privately owned but open to the public through guided tours and events by reservation.

Curiosities

Some historians and local scholars believe that the great landslide which created the boulder on which the castle stands may correspond to the “ruina” mentioned by Dante in the Inferno.

Access

Open to the public with guided tours, the castle can be visited at the cost of €5, with free entry and specific reductions available.

How to reach it

Located about one kilometer from the center of Calliano, the site can be reached by car via the A22 motorway, taking the Rovereto Nord or Trento Sud exits, or by train from the stations of Rovereto or Trento.

Between history, architectural layers, and evocative legends, Castel Pietra of Calliano is a destination full of charm.
