History and description
Erected between 1240 and 1250 by Frederick II, the castle, built in limestone and white marble, is characterized by its octagonal plan with a central courtyard and corner towers. These follow astronomical and numerical alignments, reflecting the knowledge of its owner, and include numerous halls designed to enhance the light reflected by the castle’s colors. With few defensive features, the fortress was almost certainly intended as a residential dwelling or astronomical observatory. After the emperor’s death, it lost importance and was abandoned, only to be restored in the 20th century and later recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Celebrated even in numismatics, Castel del Monte has inspired countless artists and writers. Its greatest mystery, however, lies in the identity of its architect, which remains unknown despite extensive studies.
