Castel del Monte – between science and history

Autore: Redazione 02/08/2025 10:08

History and description

Erected between 1240 and 1250 by Frederick II, the castle, built in limestone and white marble, is characterized by its octagonal plan with a central courtyard and corner towers. These follow astronomical and numerical alignments, reflecting the knowledge of its owner, and include numerous halls designed to enhance the light reflected by the castle’s colors. With few defensive features, the fortress was almost certainly intended as a residential dwelling or astronomical observatory. After the emperor’s death, it lost importance and was abandoned, only to be restored in the 20th century and later recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Curiosities

Celebrated even in numismatics, Castel del Monte has inspired countless artists and writers. Its greatest mystery, however, lies in the identity of its architect, which remains unknown despite extensive studies.

Access

Open daily from 9:00 am to 7:45 pm, with seasonal variations, the site can be visited at the cost of €10, with reductions and free entry on specific occasions.

How to reach it

The monument, highly appreciated by visitors, can be reached by car via the A14 or A16 motorways, by train or urban bus toward Andria, or by shuttle service available every 15 minutes.

A true meeting point of art, science, and history, Castel del Monte is the perfect destination for those wishing to experience the wonders of Apulia in all their facets.
