History and description
Built in the 1130s as a symbol of the Appiano family’s power, the castle was destroyed by Henry the Lion and later rebuilt. Over the centuries, it passed into the hands of various owners, including the Counts of Tyrol, until it was eventually acquired by the Municipality of Appiano. Originally designed as a defensive stronghold, the fortress features walls and a moat, a pentagonal keep nearly 25 meters high, the so‑called Gypsum Tower, and an internal chapel renowned for its Romanesque frescoes.
