Castel Beseno – the largest fortified structure in South Tyrol

Autore: Redazione 26/09/2025 07:56

History and description

First mentioned in a 12th‑century document, Castel Beseno—named after its earliest owners—is an elliptical complex overlooking the Vallagarina valley. It is composed of three original medieval cores, characterized by wide defensive walls, lunate bastions, a drawbridge, a garden known as the “Field of Tournaments” (so called because in the Middle Ages and later centuries it was used for training and jousts), cisterns, and numerous frescoes, many of which are now damaged. In the early 14th century, it passed into the hands of the Castelbarco Counts and later the Trapp Counts. After being destroyed by a fire in the early 1500s, it was rebuilt and eventually came under the ownership of the Autonomous Province of Trento, which opened it to the public. Today, it hosts an exhibition dedicated to the Battle of Calliano (10 August 1487), when Tyrolean troops defeated the Republic of Venice, halting its expansion toward Trento. Castel Beseno is also one of the sites of the museum network of the Buonconsiglio Castle Provincial Museum.

Curiosities

In addition to being a well‑known panoramic viewpoint, Castel Beseno is linked to ghost stories and legends, such as that of the “Gate of Betrayal”, through which a Venetian spy is said to have escaped before the siege of 1487. The castle also offers visitors engaging activities, including medieval reenactments and the chance to try realistic reproductions of armor, helmets, swords, and shields.

Access

Open daily except Mondays, from 10:00 am to 6:00 pm, the site can be visited at the cost of €7, with free entry and specific reductions available.

How to reach it

Located in the area of Besenello, the castle can be reached by car up to a nearby point, or on foot via Trentino Trasporti routes.

A monumental fortress of impressive scale, Castel Beseno offers visitors a unique experience that blends art, history, and breathtaking views.
