On Friday 27 March and Saturday 28 March the Puglia theatre season presents Caravaggio – of light and shadow, a monologue penned by Francesco Niccolini and performed by Luigi D’Elia, directed by Enzo Vetrano and Stefano Randisi. The piece examines the figure of Michelangelo Merisi through biography and artistic image.
The monologue traces early 17th-century culture to place Caravaggio in his historical and artistic context, highlighting his dramatic use of chiaroscuro and the visceral power of his subjects: often provocative bodies, scenes of violence and sensuality, and a painting style that defied contemporary norms. On stage, the artist’s personal life — poverty, sudden fame, fights, flight and legal troubles — is interwoven with portrayals of his most controversial canvases.
The production continues the artistic partnership between Niccolini and D’Elia, known for previous biographical pieces, and represents a first experience in monologue direction for Vetrano and Randisi. The show offers Puglian audiences a theatrical re-reading of Caravaggio’s work and myth, prompting reflection on art as both scandal and wonder.
