Brixia – Archaeological Park of Roman Brescia: a journey into the heart of antiquity

Autore: Redazione 27/08/2025 14:33

In the heart of Brescia, nestled among modern streets and historic buildings, lies a window into the city’s glorious past: Brixia – Archaeological Park of Roman Brescia. Part of the UNESCO World Heritage complex, which also includes the Monastery of Santa Giulia, this site is one of the largest and best-preserved archaeological areas in Northern Italy. It offers visitors a true journey through time, bringing to life the grandeur of ancient Brixia Romana — an experience that blends history, architecture, and a profound sense of wonder.

A Walk Among the Monuments of Ancient Rome

The archaeological park is a vast open-air museum that allows visitors to walk among the ruins of what was once the beating heart of the Roman city. The tour leads through some of the most significant monuments, offering a vivid picture of both public and private life in ancient Brescia.

  • The Capitolium (Capitoline Temple): The religious and political center of the city, the Capitolium stands as the focal point of the park. Built in 73 AD, this temple, dedicated to the Capitoline Triad — Jupiter, Juno, and Minerva — is an impressive testament to Roman sacred architecture. Its reconstructed façade and original foundations provide a tangible link to the ceremonies and rituals that once took place there.
  • The Roman Theatre: Adjacent to the Capitolium are the remains of the ancient theatre, which once seated around 15,000 spectators. Though only partially preserved, its size reflects the importance of culture and entertainment in the daily life of Brixia’s citizens.
  • The Forum and the Basilica: The tour continues through the heart of the Roman forum, the city’s main square, where commercial, political, and social activities took place. The remains of the civil basilica, a large public building used as both courthouse and meeting hall, evoke the vibrancy of ancient urban life.
  • The Domus Remains: Within the park, excavations have also uncovered the remains of private homes (domus), featuring splendid mosaic floors and fragments of frescoes. These remains provide an intimate glimpse into the daily lives and refined artistic tastes of Brixia’s inhabitants.

An Experience that Blends Archaeology and Technology

The Brixia Archaeological Park goes beyond the mere display of ruins. The experience is enhanced with multimedia installations and informative panels that help visitors contextualize the findings and visualize how the monuments originally appeared. The site forms part of the cultural network “Brixia. Brescia Romana”, in conjunction with the Santa Giulia Museum, offering a comprehensive and engaging journey through the city’s ancient history.
