On 15 May 2026, from 9:00, Castello Giusso in Vico Equense will host the national conference titled “Fortified villages: from defensive posts to tourist destinations.” Organized by the Italian Institute of Castles, the event brings together historians, local authorities, tourism professionals and heritage experts to explore how castles, towers and defensive systems can contribute to sustainable territorial development.
The conference will focus on the relationship between historical memory, landscape and innovative tourism models, with emphasis on slow tourism and immersive itineraries.
One featured initiative is the “Le 13 Porte” project, an itinerary connecting the town’s hamlets via natural trails and historical paths, transforming former defensive sites into slow, nature- and culture-oriented tourism experiences. Vico Equense — from its hilltop villages to Monte Faito and coastal viewpoints — serves as a practical example of how defensive heritage can be reinterpreted as a cultural and landscape asset.
The conference offers local stakeholders and heritage enthusiasts an opportunity to learn about best practices, establish partnerships and discuss how to balance conservation with sustainable tourism development.
