Beato Angelico and Bartholomeus Spranger in comparison

At the Musei Reali di Torino, the Spazio Scoperte presents a study exhibition that brings Beato Angelico's Last Judgment into dialogue with the interpretation by the Flemish painter Bartholomeus Spranger. The display focuses on parallels and changes in iconography developed across more than a century.

The show features key works including Beato Angelico’s Madonna of Humility alongside Spranger’s Last Judgment, arranged to highlight theological premises, compositional choices and stylistic adaptations by the later artist.

What to see

  • Tripartite layout: both artists structure the scene around Christ the Judge, flanked by the Virgin, John the Baptist and a host of saints;
  • The saved and the damned: open tombs, angels guiding the blessed toward the heavenly Jerusalem and demons driving the condemned into Hell, with Lucifer centrally placed in the lower register;
  • Iconographic sources: Augustine’s City of God influenced Angelico’s representation, later reinterpreted by Spranger in the 16th century;
  • Technical contrasts: observe differences in style, color use and spatial organization between early Renaissance language and Mannerist expression.

Visitor information

The exhibition is intended as a study-focused presentation, suited to visitors interested in religious iconography and the intersections between patronage, theology and painting practice.
