Blue Flags 2026: Calabria’s advance

Calabria adds four new Blue Flags, increasing from 23 to 27 recognitions in 2026 and strengthening its profile among Italy’s top seaside destinations. The award, given by the Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE), evaluates water quality, environmental management and local services.

Nationally, 257 municipalities received the Blue Flag in 2026, eleven more than in 2025: Liguria leads with 35 flags, while Calabria ties with Puglia for second place.

New entries

  • Amendolara (Upper Ionian coast of Cosenza) – a village with archaeological sites and an enhanced seafront.
  • Montegiordano – new inclusion expanding the Ionian coastal presence.
  • Falerna – recognized for the quality of its coastline and services.
  • Locri – added to the list, reinforcing Calabria’s network of awarded towns.

Catanzaro (Giovino) is also confirmed for the fourth consecutive year. The increase in Blue Flags is seen as evidence of the region’s growing coastal tourism offering, driven by investments in environmental management and services.

For visitors and local stakeholders the award is an incentive to continue protecting the territory and promoting sustainable tourism.
