History and description
A symbol of the maritime power of the Republic of Venice, the Arsenale di Venezia is one of the largest naval industrial complexes of the ancient world. Its origins date back to the 12th century, when Venice began to establish a naval production area capable of building, repairing, and maintaining both military and merchant ships. Over the centuries, it underwent numerous expansions, which led to the construction of workshops for oar production, pitch warehouses, shipyards, construction and launching basins, as well as facilities for artillery and the navy.
Today, the Arsenal is still partly under the jurisdiction of the Italian Navy, but many areas have been converted for cultural, exhibition, and museum use. Among these is the Museo Storico Navale (MUNAV), which preserves testimonies of the Serenissima, naval models, marine weapons, and even houses the submarine Enrico Dandolo.
Curiosities
At its peak, the Venetian Arsenal covered about 15% of the city’s urban territory, making it one of the largest industrial complexes in Europe at the time.
Access
Open daily from 10:00 am to 6:00 pm, the site can be visited in its entirety with an admission fee of €26, with free entry and specific reductions available.
How to reach it
Located in the sestiere of Castello, the Arsenal can be reached by ACTV lines, including vaporetto services, boats, and surface routes.
The productive heart of the Serenissima and a symbol of its dominance over the seas, the Venetian Arsenal is today a place of memory and culture that tells the story of centuries of naval ingenuity, military art, and republican history.
