History and description
Already frequented from the 5th century BC, the Archaeological Area of Pietrabbondante, located on a slope overlooking the valley, is a vast complex that includes a fully rock-carved theater, a small temple, a large temple, and a public domus. It is, however, best known as the site of the Italic Sanctuary of the Samnites Pentri, which served both political and religious functions, bearing witness to the role of this institution in history.
Curiosities
The sanctuary here is the only one known to have had a dual function, and numerous votive objects have been found within it.
Access
Open from Tuesday to Sunday, the site offers free admission for certain categories, while the standard ticket price is €4, with specific reductions available.
How to reach it
The site can be reached by car from Isernia toward Agnone, following the signs to the village, or by train and bus, also departing from Isernia.
A direct testimony to the role of the Samnite order throughout history, the Archaeological Area of Pietrabbondante is a well-preserved gem—perfect for diving into the past.
