History and description
One of the most important Roman monuments in the Marche region and a historic symbol of the city of Ancona, the Arch of Trajan was erected between 100 and 116 AD by the Senate and the Roman people in honor of Emperor Marcus Ulpius Trajan, who personally financed the expansion and fortification of the city’s port. Traditionally attributed to the architect Apollodorus of Damascus, the arch is notable for its particularly slender proportions and features a single central archway framed by pairs of fluted Corinthian columns on both façades, set on a high podium of limestone.
At the top, where originally stood bronze statues representing marine deities and emperors—later lost in the 9th century—there is an inscription honoring Trajan, as well as his wife Plotina and his sister Marciana. Although never completely altered, the arch underwent some structural modifications over the centuries to improve its visibility from both the port and the city.
Curiosities
Historical documents state that every ship captain docking in Ancona was required to pay a fee for the maintenance of the arch.
Access
The Arch of Trajan is an open‑air monument and can therefore be viewed freely and at no cost.
How to reach it
Located on Lungomare Vanvitelli, the arch can be reached by urban bus lines such as 10, 20, or N.
A true emblem of the relationship between Ancona, the sea, and Roman history, the Arch of Trajan remains a bridge between ancient civilization and contemporary life.
