History and description
The eastern entrance to the medieval city, the Arch of Portamarina is made of stone and features a shape and battlements reminiscent of defensive systems, as well as its connection to the Sforza castle walls. It is particularly known for preserving a Latin papal inscription by Pope Sixtus V, celebrating the concept of divine justice.
Curiosities
The arch also served as the exit point for executioners’ processions, who would lead prisoners toward the hill where they were to be hanged.
Access
As an urban gateway, despite its historical value, the arch can be freely crossed at any time, providing access to the medieval area of the city.
How to reach it
Located near the historic center of Fermo, the Arch of Portamarina is best reached on foot, after parking in one of the many public parking areas nearby.
Considered one of the best-preserved medieval gates of Fermo, the Arch of Portamarina represents a meeting point between the city’s military past and its present-day life, still rich in history, culture, and symbolism.
