History and description
Located at the eastern entrance of the ancient city, near the Roman bridge over the Buthier River and the Porta Pretoria, the Arch of Augustus was commissioned by Aulus Terentius Varro Murena and built in 25 BC to celebrate the foundation of Augusta Praetoria by the emperor. Standing about 11.4 meters high, it is decorated with ten Corinthian semi-columns—originally enriched with reliefs—and an attic restored in the early 20th century. In the Middle Ages, it became known as Saint-Voût due to the presence of a votive crucifix under the vault, which is now preserved in the Treasury Museum of Aosta Cathedral.
Curiosities
If observed closely, the arch—built to mark the beginning of peace after the defeat of the Salassi—is actually slightly tilted southward. Having also survived the floods of the river, it is today considered the true symbol of Aosta, appearing in logos, stamps, postcards, and tourist illustrations.
Access
Once the destination of votive processions in the Middle Ages, the arch is now included in guided tours as the monumental entrance to the city. This year, in honor of its 2050th anniversary, special guided visits to its restoration site are scheduled. Ideal as the starting point for a walking itinerary of the city, it is freely accessible to all, at any time, and visible directly from the street.
How to reach it
The site can be reached via the A5 motorway, by bus or train to Piazza Arco d’Augusto, or on foot from the historic center.
A monument that serves as the gateway to the city and its countless beauties, the Arch of Augustus is an unmissable stop for every visitor.
