History and description
Located to the east of Bolzano Cathedral and overlooking Piazza Walther, the Arch of the Wine Gate takes its name from its medieval function as an opening for the sale of wine produced by ecclesiastical winemakers after Pentecost. Its structure is an integral part of the Gothic style of the Cathedral, framed by sculptural depictions of wine producers, a reminder of the strong bond with the local community.
Curiosities
Bolzano, the city where the gate stands, is often described as a city “built on wine” due to the abundance of vineyards. The very area where the monument rises was once a private vineyard later donated to the municipality.
Access
As it stands right next to Bolzano Cathedral, the gate is freely visible from the outside and is a popular photo spot to capture the beauty of the city and its arcades.
How to reach it
Situated in the heart of the city, the gate can be reached by car, parking in Piazza Mazzini, or by train to Bolzano station, continuing on foot along Via Alto Adige.
A perfect symbol of the bond between urban life and history, the Arch of the Wine Gate allows visitors to immerse themselves in Bolzano’s ancient traditions, which still influence the city’s present-day habits, offering a glimpse of what once was.
