Antica Kroton Futura: archaeology driving Crotone’s regeneration

A coordinated initiative between the Municipality of Crotone, the Ministry of Culture and the Calabria Region aims to turn the city’s archaeological heritage into a development engine. Antica Kroton Futura combines mapping, public engagement and targeted interventions to connect history, environment and new economic opportunities.

The project is guided by a programmatic document known as the White Book, compiled through surveys, public consultations and multidisciplinary analysis. The White Book forms the basis for urban planning that treats archaeology as both a conservation priority and a resource for local identity, cultural attraction and job creation.

Key actions included

• Planned excavations in strategic areas such as Acquabona and Parco Pignera to expand knowledge of the site and recover archaeological materials.
• Restoration and access works at the walkways of the Castle of Charles V and other consolidation projects to make heritage sites accessible.
• Creation of a "narrative ribbon", a cycle-pedestrian route linking major memory sites to tell Crotone’s history in a continuous, usable way.
• Integration with urban planning and mobility networks to connect the city with national and European routes, improving accessibility and sustainability.

The project included an Urban Development Laboratory, run in collaboration with the Fondazione SOS – School of Sustainability and featuring contributions from professionals such as architect Mario Cucinella and Professor Carlo Rescigno. Teams worked across four strategic zones (northern area, urban core, waterfront and the Esaro basin) to draft concrete, integrated and sustainable proposals.

Expected outcomes and community involvement

Practical goals include new cultural tourism routes, growth in local creative industries, skills development for heritage management and enhanced public services. The process followed a public program engaging institutions, professional orders and citizens, aimed at converting analyses and ideas into implementable projects.

The work of the Antica Kroton operational unit, led by local managers, has helped move from vision to operational planning, outlining specific interventions and expected implementation timelines.
