ANGELS. Messengers, guardians and wanderers

The Capitoline Museums host an exhibition that traces the depiction of angels across centuries of sacred and contemporary art. Installed in the ground-floor rooms of Palazzo dei Conservatori, the show juxtaposes well-known masterpieces and rarely exhibited works to highlight the symbolic roles of angels in Western visual culture.

What to see

The itinerary is structured around three thematic groups — messengers, guardians and wanderers — allowing visitors to follow the angel's changing functions from theological figure to everyday symbol.

  • Selected works: paintings and sculptures from institutions such as the Uffizi Gallery, the Museum of Capodimonte and the National Galleries of Ancient Art.
  • Notable highlights: "The Guardian Angel" by Pietro da Cortona, "The Announcing Angel" by Carlo Dolci, "Saint Matthew with the Angel" by Guercino.
  • Rare loans: the "Guardian Angel" by Spadarino, on exceptional loan from Rieti.
  • A dialogue between religious tradition and contemporary artistic languages.
