History and description
Built toward the end of the 1st century AD following a testamentary request, the amphitheater was designed according to the natural slope of the land. Over the centuries, it also served as a fortification, storage site, and necropolis, until its rediscovery in the 20th century through archaeological excavations that highlighted its importance. These revealed its surface area of about 6,000 square meters, four main entrances, and the central arena surrounded by three tiers of seating.
Curiosities
The oldest monument in the history of Larino and a symbol of the city, the site is linked to the story of Saint Primianus, Larino’s patron saint, who, according to tradition, was martyred by decapitation after taming a lion.
Access
Open from Tuesday to Saturday, the amphitheater can be visited free of charge, although the nearby baths and villa, often included in the visit, may require an entrance fee.
How to reach it
Located just 1 kilometer on foot from the center of Larino, the Roman amphitheater can be reached by car from Campobasso via State Road 647, or by bus toward Termoli.
Considered a hidden archaeological gem—little known yet well preserved—the Roman amphitheater, together with the archaeological park of which it is part, is an essential stop on any Molise tour for lovers of history and art.
