History and description
Located within the Archaeological Park of Civitella, the Roman amphitheater in Chieti was built around the 1st century AD, probably by a magistrate who wanted to dedicate the structure as a tribute to battles and gladiatorial scenes. With the fall of the Empire, it was first turned into a necropolis and later into an artisan area. After the Bourbon period, it was completely forgotten until excavations carried out in the late 20th century brought it back to light. Thanks to these works, a very large structure was discovered—among the biggest in the Empire—covered in concrete, where the podium, the honorary tribune, and part of the Roman cistern supplying the nearby baths are still visible.
Curiosities
Although restoration work has not yet been completed, the municipality has proposed maintaining the tradition of performances, which have taken place there since antiquity, by organizing screenings, concerts, theatrical performances, and sometimes themed reenactments.
Access
Open from Tuesday to Saturday, the amphitheater is accessible free of charge, with the possibility of booking guided tours.
How to reach it
Located a short distance from the historic center, the amphitheater can be reached by car, following the signs for the archaeological museum, or on foot.
A central monument of Roman heritage, the amphitheater is a special place for lovers of theater, art, and history!
