Amelia: "Womanly Gazes" at the Civic Museum

The exhibition "Womanly Gazes — 20th‑century Italian works" opened on March 7 at the Museo civico archeologico e Pinacoteca di Amelia and will be on view until June 30. Organized by the Municipality of Amelia with the cooperative l'Orologio, the show presents a curated selection from the Conti‑Paladini collection.

The display offers multiple perspectives on the female figure across the 20th century: portraits, profiles and nudes that convey intimate, symbolic and psychological readings. Alongside the subjects' looks, the collector's perspective shapes the exhibition, centering women's representation.

  • Mino Maccari — Portrait of a Woman (c. 1950): bold strokes and vivid hues suggesting inner tension and melancholy.
  • Fausto Pirandello — The Washerwomen / Women at their Toilet (c. 1940): an intimate scene rendered with dense painterly matter.
  • Giuseppe Capogrossi — Woman's Thought (1938): pen and ink drawing where line becomes an emotive instrument of introspection.
  • Antonio Corpora — Seated Woman: economical, swift gestures that capture psychology and sensuality.
  • Emilio Greco — Nude (c. 1960): sculpture-like plasticity and compositional softness.
  • Carlo Levi — Portrait of a Woman (c. 1930): work marked by psychological depth from a Florentine period.
  • Massimo Campigli — Woman with Halo (1960): a solemn figure balancing archaic and modern elements.

The Conti‑Paladini collection is notable for its deliberate absence of male subjects: a cultural stance that emphasizes the centrality of female imagery in 20th‑century art. The works also reflect the collector's cultural engagement and discernment.

For practical information on opening hours, guided tours and tickets, contact the Museo civico archeologico e Pinacoteca di Amelia or the municipal cultural offices. The exhibition is a timely opportunity to explore women's portrayals in modern Italian art through varied and expressive viewpoints.
