Roman aqueduct of Isernia – the oldest hydraulic infrastructure in Italy

Autore: Redazione 01/10/2025 23:12

History and Description

The Roman Aqueduct of Isernia is an extraordinary feat of hydraulic engineering dating back to the 3rd century B.C., built during the period of the Roman colony of Isernia. This ancient aqueduct is still in operation today, making it one of the longest-functioning Roman hydraulic infrastructures in continuous use. The structure develops along two main sections: the first, about 3,300 meters long, begins at the spring near Mount San Martino and reaches the main reservoir near the upper decuman gate of the city; the second section, about 1,100 meters long, runs through the historic center along the main decumanus to the lower gate, overlooking the road to Venafro. The conduit, called specus, is mostly carved into travertine rock and in some areas reaches a depth of up to 30 meters below the current ground level. The spring provides clear, fresh water that continues to supply the city to this day.

Curiosities

The underground passage still preserves original sections with natural curves shaped by the travertine’s morphology and the ancient collection well.

Access Information

The aqueduct is not open to visitors as a traditional museum, so there is no entrance fee or fixed opening hours. However, some sections are visible from various points in the city.

Directions

Located between Mount San Martino and the historic center of Isernia, the aqueduct can be reached by car via the SS85 or SS17 roads toward the center, by bus using local routes, or by train from Isernia’s railway station near the old town.

The Roman Aqueduct of Isernia stands as a bridge between past and present — a true jewel of Roman engineering still alive in the heart of Molise.
