History and description
Built around the mid-13th century by order of the son of Frederick II, from whom it takes its name, the structure is characterized by 21 pointed arches made of limestone and by a dedicatory inscription to its architect. Probably inspired by a Roman aqueduct, it served the purpose of irrigating gardens and supplying water to mills.
Curiosities
The monument, which has survived numerous earthquakes, stands as a work of medieval engineering and was also used as a film set for The American with George Clooney and Violante Placido.
Access
As an integral part of the urban fabric, the aqueduct can be visited free of charge at any time of day, with limitations only related to vehicle traffic.
How to reach it
Located in Piazza Garibaldi and already visible from the road, the aqueduct can be reached on foot by taking the stone staircase that begins at Corso Ovidio.
A perfect blend of architecture and engineering, the medieval aqueduct testifies to human ingenuity through the centuries and offers visitors to Sulmona a glimpse of past life woven into the present!
