On Wednesday 29 April, the Centro per l’arte contemporanea Luigi Pecci hosts A Visual Diary, a Live Programme event in which director and stage designer Fabio Cherstich retraces the queer art scene of 1980s New York.
The work blends performative narration, archival material and art-historical reflection to tell the lives and works of three artists – Patrick Angus, Larry Stanton and Darrell Ellis – who were affected by the AIDS pandemic. Cherstich performs a first-person account built from largely unseen documents and references to key East Village locations of the time.
The performance is presented in connection with the exhibition VIVONO. Arte e affetti, HIV-AIDS in Italia. 1982-1996, curated by Michele Bertolino, on view at Centro Pecci until 10 May.
The project is written, directed and designed by Fabio Cherstich. Original video design by Francesco Sileo; dramaturgy by Anna Siccardi and Fabio Cherstich; assistant director Diletta Ferruzzi. Cherstich’s practice is known for merging strong visual aesthetics with contemporary media and has been presented in national and international theatres.
