At the French Academy in Villa Medici, Rome, an exhibition by Nicole Gravier repositions the photostory as a medium for social critique. The show revisits popular imagery from the 1970s to expose the mechanisms that produced the "fiction of the feminine" and entrenched models of representation.
Gravier's practice operates through semiotic dissection: using staged, ironic scenes drawn from popular culture, the artist dismantles languid poses and romantic rhetoric, turning stereotypes into subjects of critical scrutiny.
The exhibition also converses with concurrent shows addressing women's representation; visiting provides a contemporary perspective on how popular imagery intersects with gender politics.
