Routine road maintenance between Plaza de San Miguel and the Coso area in Zaragoza revealed a well‑preserved subterranean Roman structure. Municipal archaeological teams responded immediately, recording the site with photography, detailed plans and 3D scans.
Workers noticed regular masonry fragments and small channels in the soil, prompting suspension of works and an archaeological intervention. Non‑invasive documentation allowed mapping of the monument without damage, uncovering an extensive construction located meters below the modern surface.
The structure is dated to the 1st century AD and built in opus caementicium (Roman concrete) combined with stone and brick. Layered walls and carefully arranged channels demonstrate advanced hydraulic and structural expertise designed for longevity and to withstand later urban buildup.
The monument combined practical functions—spanning low or flood‑prone ground and distributing water to fountains, baths, homes and workshops—with social and symbolic roles, supporting public health, economic activity and the prestige of the Roman colony of Caesaraugusta.
Archaeologists are completing stratigraphic investigations and laboratory analyses of recovered materials. The site is currently secured for study; any public access, displays or guided visits will be announced once conservation and visitor‑management plans are in place.
Visitor note: check announcements from the local archaeological service for updates on site access, exhibitions and publications related to the excavation.
