At Naples’ Teatro Bellini (until Feb. 15, 2026), Come gli uccelli returns with a contemporary drama that puts identity, love and belonging under a harsh spotlight.
Adapted from Wajdi Mouawad and directed by Marco Lorenzi, who also co-wrote the stage adaptation with Lorenzo De Iacovo, the production centers on a romance deemed “impossible” for one reason only: the world insists on making it that way.

Eitan and Wahida meet, connect, and are quickly pulled into a much larger story. He is of Israeli background; she has Arab heritage. What could remain private becomes instantly public. exposed, tested, judged. When love runs through collective wounds, it stops being a two-person matter and turns into a flashpoint.
That’s what gives the show its urgency. In a moment when difference is routinely flattened into labels - and complexity is treated as a threat - hatred can feel like an easy shortcut: it provides someone to blame and a simple “us” versus “them.” Come gli uccelli rejects that comfort. It refuses to reduce its characters to symbols, insisting instead on the weight of inheritance: the stories people are born into, the loyalties they’re handed, the fears they’re taught.

Built by Il Mulino di Amleto and A.M.A. Factory as a real exercise in plurality, with a cast designed to mix backgrounds, biographies and languages, the production makes “encounter” not just a theme but the show’s living core. As the Bellini’s own framing suggests, in a present where walls no longer offer answers, only bridges do.
The play’s structure widens the lens beyond “two young lovers.” It digs into family histories, buried secrets and long-suppressed memories, asking what happens when the past is finally faced head-on, not as destiny, but as a choice. By the end, the message is quietly radical: freedom isn’t rootlessness. It’s deciding what to do with your roots, and whether difference can be a home, not a trench.
