Villa Frigerij – an Italian marvel surrounded by greenery

Autore: Redazione 01/10/2025 21:21

History and description

Built around 1830 at the will of Baron Ferrante Frigerj, Villa Frigerij is an elegant Neoclassical residence with a rectangular plan located in Chieti, designed by Neapolitan architect Enrico Riccio. The two‑storey building stands on the hill that today hosts the Villa Comunale, once countryside property of the Frigerj family, and was conceived as a private residence immersed in nature. The structure is distinguished by its sober and balanced style, with a linear façade featuring large windows and a central body flanked by two wings. The surrounding park, now open to the public, is rich in statues, tree‑lined avenues, and an ornamental fountain purchased at the Paris National Exposition in 1891, as well as a panoramic terrace overlooking the Majella. Since 1959, the villa has housed the National Archaeological Museum of Abruzzo, preserving artifacts of great historical and artistic value, including the famous statue of the Warrior of Capestrano, making the building one of the region’s main museum centers.

Curiosities

In addition to hosting the renowned Warrior of Capestrano, symbol of pre‑Roman Abruzzo, Villa Frigerij also preserves a rich collection of ancient coins, ceramic artifacts, and Italic and Roman bronzes. The building also served as a public school before becoming a museum and, despite its elegance, it remains relatively little known to the general public, making it a surprising discovery for visitors.

Access

Open from Tuesday to Sunday, from 8:30 am to 11:30 am, the villa can be visited at the cost of €4, with free admission and specific reductions available.

How to reach it

Located in Chieti Alta, the building can be reached by car via the A24 or A14 motorways, or by bus (lines 1 or 5).

Immersed in greenery and guardian of millenary treasures, Villa Frigerij is a perfect blend of art, history, and nature in the heart of Chieti.
