An archival documentary has been made public that documents excavations at Grotta Paglicci, a key Paleolithic site in Rignano Garganico. Restored and recovered from family archives, the 32-minute film shows excavation phases and reconstructs the discovery of a female burial dated to about 30,000 years ago.
The footage is an important research and cultural resource and is slated to be donated to the planned Paleolithic Museum of Rignano Garganico to ensure preservation and public access.
The film records pivotal moments of the excavation campaigns and the fieldwork carried out by institutions and archaeologists specializing in the Italian Paleolithic.
The recovered footage enriches the documentary record for Grotta Paglicci and provides visual material useful for paleoanthropological studies and public outreach. The images clarify historical excavation methods and the stratigraphic context in which finds crucial to understanding prehistoric communities of southern Italy were recovered.
The recovery of the documentary is part of a broader strategy to valorize the site. Announced initiatives include:
Grotta Paglicci remains one of the most significant Paleolithic sites in Europe.
