Nino Springolo at Museo Bailo: an exhibition on artistic independence

Museo Bailo in Treviso hosts a retrospective dedicated to Nino Springolo (Treviso, 1886–1975), an important yet discreet figure of early 20th-century Venetian art. The show, staged to mark the 50th anniversary of his death and the 140th of his birth, brings together almost one hundred works from public and private collections.

The artist and his path

Springolo is framed as an autonomous creator who resists easy classification: his work ranges from divisionist experiments to Cézanne-inspired approaches, with occasional echoes of earlier masters and later outcomes that verge on a naïve sensibility. His painting is characterised by chromatic inquiry, precise drawing and a contemplative relationship with landscape and figures.

Exhibition layout

The presentation combines historical accuracy and thematic critique and is organised in four main sections:

  • Landscapes – From divisionist attempts to views of the Treviso countryside and mature large-scale landscapes of the 1950s.
  • Portraits – Preparatory studies and portraits demonstrating the central role of line and structure.
  • Still lifes – Everyday objects composed to explore tonal contrasts and coloured shadows.
  • “The Two Companions” – A concluding room inspired by Giovanni Comisso’s novel, contextualising Springolo’s relationships with Gino Rossi and Arturo Martini.

Highlights and significance

The landscape section offers the clearest insight into Springolo’s inquiry: his ties to Treviso’s waterways and lagoon, and a personal absorption of Cézanne’s teachings. Portraits reveal an intimate, everyday language, while still lifes underline his sensitivity to tonal modulation and compositional balance.

Curatorship and display

Curated with a historical-philological rigour and critical reading, the exhibition emphasises Springolo’s consistent "artistic honesty": a deliberate working method favouring depth over prolific output, resulting in a concentrated but significant body of work.

Practical information

  • Venue: Museo Bailo, Treviso.
  • Curator: curated by Fabrizio Malachin.
  • Collections: works from public and private holdings.

This exhibition is a valuable opportunity to rediscover an artist who, while maintaining an independent stance from avant-garde movements, actively engaged with the major cultural currents of his time.
