The Appian Way: historical and archaeological significance

The Appian Way, known as the Regina Viarum, stands among the most remarkable achievements of Roman engineering and Italy's archaeological heritage. Built beginning in 312 BC, it linked Rome to the southern peninsula as far as Brindisi, crossing today’s Lazio, Campania, Basilicata and Puglia over approximately 550 km. Its dual carriageway design, varied pavements and massive bridges and viaducts made it a model for Roman road construction.

What the documentary covers

The feature retraces the cultural, historical and landscape role of the Appian Way, highlighting:

  • construction phases and engineering solutions developed by the Romans;
  • the road’s role in commerce, military movements and pilgrimages;
  • the relationship between the route, agricultural landscapes and suburban settlements;
  • the monuments along the way: tombs, villas, churches and funerary structures;
  • recent studies, archaeological excavations and conservation and enhancement projects.

Research, protection and access

The documentary presents results from archaeological research and conservation projects that have produced restorations and new archaeological parks along the route. These actions support both the preservation of ancient features and improved public access, helping to create cultural itineraries for visitors.

Expert contributions

The narrative features insights from historians and archaeologists who explore topographic and landscape aspects. Contributions from specialists in ancient topography, landscape archaeology and monument restoration shed light on the layered history of the road and the archaeological finds encountered along its course.

Why visit the Appian Way

Visiting the Appian Way offers a unique opportunity for those interested in archaeological sites and historic landscapes. Walking or traveling sections of the road lets you follow centuries of history, observe material remains of Roman civilization and appreciate ongoing research and conservation efforts that make many areas accessible.
