Good Friday in Cortona and Ossaia: rites and historical reenactments

The historic centre of Cortona and the small village of Ossaia host traditional Good Friday observances that combine religious devotion, scenography and strong local participation. These events attract both local faithful and visitors interested in sacred traditions in Tuscan villages.

  • When: the evening of Good Friday, starting around 9:00 PM.
  • Where: Cortona (departure from the Church of the Holy Spirit, ending in Piazza della Repubblica) and Ossaia (throughout the village and near the Roman Villa excavations).
  • What to expect: Cortona features a procession with historic statues and a relic of the Holy Cross; Ossaia stages a community-driven historical reenactment of the Passion.

In Cortona the torchlit procession winds through the historic centre, passing landmarks and presenting wooden sculptures that depict key moments of the Passion. The event traditionally includes readings and hymns and is often broadcast by local radio stations for those who cannot attend in person.

Ossaia’s representation is organized by the parish with the support of local associations. Held every three years, it involves over one hundred participants: living scenes, period costumes and scripted sequences recreate the Passion, concluding with a crucifixion scene near the Roman Villa excavations.

Practical tips for visitors

  • Arrival: come early to secure parking and a good viewing spot; streets in the historic centres may be closed to traffic and can become crowded.
  • Conduct: observe silence and respect during religious rites; follow instructions from event organizers.
  • Photography: avoid flash photography and adhere to any restrictions set by the parish or stewards.
  • Information: contact the local parishes or Cortona tourist offices for details on schedules, routes and available services.

These processions are important religious and cultural moments for the villages involved and provide visitors with an opportunity to experience the artistic heritage and communal traditions of two historic Tuscan centres.
