Van Dyck at Palazzo Ducale: the Portrait of Charles I's Children

The Anthony van Dyck retrospective at Palazzo Ducale in Genoa has welcomed an important loan: the Portrait of the Three Eldest Children of Charles I (1635), from the Galleria Sabauda of the Musei Reali in Turin. The painting is displayed at the start of the sixth room, engaging with portraits of the parents and the young aristocrats featured in the previous gallery.

The depiction of the three children—Charles, Mary and James—reveals period iconography: motifs of fidelity, purity and innocence that serve both political purposes and showcase Van Dyck's refined pictorial language.

Why visit

The exhibition allows visitors to compare portraits from diverse social backgrounds to highlight stylistic choices, symbolic details and Van Dyck's versatility as a portraitist. The show includes roughly 60 paintings organized into ten thematic sections, with loans from major international museums and leading Italian collections.
