€1 million pledged for the protection of Rome's archaeological sites

On 24 April 2026 a contribution of €1,000,000 was announced to support safeguarding Rome's archaeological heritage. This amount supplements earlier funds, reaching a combined total of roughly €4 million for projects related to Roman civilization.

Beneficiaries and goals

The funding is intended to back activities led by archaeologists, conservators, research teams, universities and cultural institutions operating in Italy and Mediterranean countries with Roman heritage. The aims include strengthening material conservation, improving documentation and promoting both scientific and public access to sites.

Areas of intervention

  • Excavations and field surveys: stratigraphic investigations and contextual analysis;
  • Conservation and restoration: stabilisation of structures and recovery of at-risk artifacts;
  • Digital documentation: photogrammetry, 3D surveys and data archiving for modern asset management;
  • Interdisciplinary research projects: studies aimed at advancing the understanding of Roman contexts.

Outstanding issues

Details such as the formal recipient institution, the list of projects to be funded, selection criteria and disbursement timelines have not yet been disclosed. Clarification of these points is essential to assess the real impact on conservation work and site accessibility.
