On the tenth anniversary of the 2016 earthquake that hit the central Apennines, Umbria is seeing renewed momentum in reconstruction and a focused effort to protect and promote its cultural heritage. Restoration of churches, symbolic reopenings and local development measures are helping rebuild services, identity and opportunities for mountain communities.

• Worksites: nearly 13,000 sites completed in the past three years and about 9,000 projects underway, according to regional monitoring data.
• Return home: six out of ten families have moved back into their homes, indicating gradual normalization.
• Religious heritage: interventions are planned for 194 places of worship in Umbria, with a project budget around 153 million euros. Reopenings such as the Basilica of San Benedetto in Norcia carry both symbolic and cultural significance.
• Local development: initiatives such as the NextAppennino program and special economic zones support businesses, training and new activities aimed at countering depopulation.

The reconstruction authority highlights a combined approach that links building recovery, economic renewal and the promotion of natural and artistic assets. Outlook and prevention: alongside structural works, plans emphasize seismic prevention, building safety and enhanced services (schools, healthcare, digital connections) to make villages more attractive and resilient.
