Introduction
Alto Lazio, between the Rieti and Viterbo provinces, is emerging as a prime destination for walking tourism: tufaceous landscapes, ancient ruins, gorges and volcanic lakes create routes perfect for immersive, sustainable trekking. May and June are especially suitable thanks to mild temperatures and lush vegetation.
Walking calendar
Starting 9 May 2026 a program of guided walks began to promote the area's trails. Many itineraries are free with mandatory online booking and priority for visitors from other provinces. Options range from easy archaeological walks to longer treks, all led by experienced guides focusing on nature, history and local products.
Vulci archaeological-natural park
Vulci is a natural gateway to several hikes: Etruscan ruins set in oak and downy oak woods, trails along the Fiora river and the Pellicone pond. Typical routes are short (4–8 km) with gentle to moderate elevation changes, suitable for families and less experienced hikers as well as those seeking a more structured trek.
Tuscania and medieval panoramas
Tuscania offers engaging urban hikes: the historic center, the Cathedral of San Pietro and Santa Maria Maggiore create panoramic walks over tufaceous rock and old walls. Guided outings include historical storytelling and photo stops — ideal for those combining nature, culture and photography.
Corchiano gorges
The tufaceous gorges and ancient trackways around Corchiano provide wilder terrain: soft ground, sculpted tuff walls and hill views. These routes suit intermediate walkers but can often be shortened for a gentler experience.
Volcanic lakes and the Cammino dei Vulcani
Trails linking Lake Bracciano, Lake Vico and Lake Bolsena run along shores and volcanic ridges. Walking the lake rims pairs watery landscapes with food stops: freshwater fish, local bread and Tuscia wines.
When to go
May and June are the best months: mild climate, flowering plants and long daylight. Walks are commonly scheduled in the morning or late afternoon to avoid peak heat hours (12:00–16:00).
Practical tips for eco‑friendly trekking
- Essential gear: light hiking boots, 15–20 l backpack, at least 1 liter of water, hat, sunscreen, compact wind jacket.
- Respect the environment: carry out all waste, do not collect archaeological finds or plants, stick to marked trails.
- Planning: check distance and elevation, select routes that match your fitness level and choose guided hikes if unfamiliar with the area.
- Common mistakes: starting without water, underestimating sun exposure, wearing unsuitable shoes (e.g. city sneakers), planning the hardest outings during the hottest hours.
To join the organized walks check dates and booking procedures on the official channels of the local walking program.
