Venue: MAXXI - National Museum of 21st Century Arts, Via Guido Reni 4a, Rome.
This exhibition proposes a broad, multidisciplinary survey of Italian cultural production from the postwar years to today. Using painting, sculpture, installations and contributions from cinema, theatre, architecture and literature, the show examines how irony, self-mockery and paradox functioned as critical tools and remedies to tragic circumstances.
What to expect: over 140 artists present works that intersect around themes of the tragicomic. The layout highlights thematic links and cultural lineages and is accompanied by a dedicated publication and an extended public programme of talks, screenings and workshops.
Visitor tips:
The show offers a chance to see how Italian culture has often used humour as a means to confront drama, producing outcomes that range from satirical to contemplative. Recommended for visitors seeking a critical and historical perspective on contemporary Italian art.
