Tragicomica at MAXXI: the exhibition on Italy’s tragicomic art

Autore: Redazione 04/04/2026 21:28

Tragicomica at MAXXI: overview

Tragicomica is a large-scale group exhibition at MAXXI in Rome that reads recent Italian art through the lens of the tragicomic. Curated by Andrea Bellini and Francesco Stocchi, the show presents over 300 works by around 130 artists and is accompanied by a multidisciplinary program including literature, film, theatre and architecture.

What to expect

The exhibition aims to highlight voices and approaches that have often been peripheral to the art system, focusing on artists who place irony, paradox and dramatic tension at the center of their practice. The displays alternate well-known pieces with lesser-seen works, creating thematic routes that shift between amusement and unease.

Strengths

  • Scale and ambition: the breadth of the selection gives a wide-angle view of recent Italian art.
  • Interdisciplinary approach: the accompanying program enhances the exhibition with textual and performative contributions.
  • Visibility for emerging artists: the group format provides institutional exposure to less represented practices.

Limitations

  • Narrative focus: the attempt to encompass many positions sometimes weakens the exhibition’s overall coherence.
  • Repetition: several names overlap with similar recent shows, which can give a sense of déjà vu.
  • Lack of dedicated project spaces: without smaller rooms for in-depth presentations, some artists receive less contextual attention.
