Dante’s Tomb – the resting place of the great poet in Ravenna

Autore: Redazione 30/09/2025 20:19

History and description

Located next to the Basilica of San Francesco, the Tomb of Dante Alighieri—the supreme poet of Italian literature—is a Neoclassical mausoleum preserved in Ravenna, where the writer spent his final years. Built in 1780 to the design of Camillo Morigia, it is externally characterized by a small white‑marble temple with an arch and dome, decorated on the façade with a Latin inscription and symbols such as the serpent biting its own tail, a metaphor for the eternity of the poet’s fame, and the Gonzaga family crest, who commissioned the work. Inside, the tomb consists of a simple Roman sarcophagus placed in a chapel lined with marble and stucco, and decorated with a bas‑relief by Pietro Lombardo. Today, it bears a Greek cross, a crown, and an inscription by Bernardo Canaccio. Declared a national monument, it is surrounded by the so‑called “Dante area”, a zone of respect and silence that includes the garden with the Quadrarco di Braccioforte, the cemetery area around the Franciscan convent where Dante wished to be buried and where his remains lay until 1778, the Franciscan cloisters, and the Dante Museum and House complex.

Curiosities

During the Napoleonic occupation, fearing desecration and attempts by Florentines to reclaim the poet’s remains, the Franciscan friars hid them inside a convent wall. They were only returned to the tomb after restoration works in 1865. Every year, the city of Florence—still claiming Dante’s body—sends olive oil to Ravenna to fuel the votive lamp that burns in the tomb. From here also begins a cultural and hiking route that retraces all the places of Dante’s exile up to his native city.

Access

Open daily, with hours varying by season, the tomb is free to visit year‑round. Next to it stands the Dante Museum, which offers a paid itinerary dedicated to the poet’s life and works.

How to reach it

Located in Ravenna’s historic center, the tomb can be reached by car (with parking available in the city center) or on foot from anywhere in the old town.

Visiting Dante’s Tomb, honoring the father of the Italian language, means paying tribute to one of the greatest poets of all time in an experience that blends history and culture.
