Terni and the Franciscan hill towns: a route to explore

In the green landscape of Umbria, just outside the city of Terni, an itinerary links art, spirituality and nature. Coinciding with an exhibition on Giotto and Saint Francis, a series of guided visits and family activities has been organised to highlight historic sites and lesser-known villages.

Route and main stops

  • April 11 — City discovery in Terni: visit to the Sanctuary of San Francesco with the Cappella Paradisi (including the Last Judgment frescoes), the Church of San Cristoforo and the Church of Sant’Antonio da Padova, all key sites of local Franciscan devotion.
  • April 19 — Amerino area itinerary: from Amelia (Chiesa delle Cinque Fonti) to Lugnano in Teverina (Convent and Church of San Francesco) and Alviano with its castle; the route concludes at the unusual Grotta di Sant’Illuminata in Guardea.
  • Further visits are planned in May and June, with routes through small towns and Franciscan landmarks.

Workshops and family activities

The programme features educational workshops for children and families, hands-on activities and guided tours led by local operators who provide context on the history and art of the area. Activities are designed to be accessible and engaging for participants of all ages.

Practical information

  • Admission: visits and workshops are free of charge but require reservation.
  • Booking contact: Tempus Vitae — phone +39 340 566 3725, email [email protected].
  • What to bring: comfortable clothing, sturdy shoes for uneven surfaces and historic floors; a waterproof layer if rain is forecast.
  • Tip: check the latest schedule on the National Gallery of Umbria website or contact the organisers for exact meeting points and times.

This programme is ideal for travellers and locals who wish to experience the intersection of art, faith and landscape, rediscovering historic centres and hidden corners of the Terni area through guided visits and participatory activities.
