A commemorative plaque has been unveiled beneath the Town Hall porticoes in Trieste to mark the events of April 30, 1945, key moments in the city's liberation from Nazi occupation. The plaque aims to preserve collective memory and indicate the places where decisive actions occurred.
The plaque recalls the leadership of don Edoardo Marzari, who headed the local Liberation Committee and organized the uprising with a few thousand volunteers from groups such as the "Domenico Rossetti" formations and "Giustizia e Libertà." At dawn on April 30, clashes took place over control of key public buildings, with efforts to defend the Government Palace and Town Hall from German attempts to regain them.
In the days that followed, Yugoslav units entered the city, leaving political and physical consequences that remain visible on some buildings and streets today. The memorial does more than recount fighting: it highlights moments of agreement and cooperation across ideological divides aimed at protecting the city's identity.
The plaque is visible under the Town Hall porticoes and can be viewed by visitors during normal access hours to the square.
