La Primavera dei Sapori (May 16–17)

This culinary weekend features local chefs’ show cookings, tastings of typical products (Sutri bean, extra virgin olive oil, local wines such as Aleatico and Grechetto) and a lunch in the flowering garden of Palazzo Doebbing. Traditional Tuscia dishes—homemade pasta with wild boar sauce, gnocchi with mutton and legume soups—are highlighted.

What to see in Sutri beyond the festival

  • Archaeological Park: tuf rock amphitheatre, mithraeum and Etruscan rock-cut necropolis.
  • Villa Savorelli and the Bosco Sacro, a historic estate often hosting cultural events.
  • Historic centre: Piazza del Comune, Torre dell’Orologio, Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta, the Old Washhouse and the small church of San Fortunata.

Typical visiting hours for the Archaeological Park: amphitheatre Tue–Fri 10:00–19:00 (closed Monday); mithraeum Tue–Fri 10:20–14:40, Sat–Sun and holidays 10:20–16:20. Guided tours last about 1 hour (max 20 people, approx. €10, free under 12). Reservations are recommended at +39 0761 609393 or +39 351 2440558.

How to get there

  • By car: via the Via Cassia (SS2). From Rome about 50 km; from the A1 motorway exit at Magliano Sabina and follow signs to Civita Castellana → Nepi → Sutri.
  • Public transport: Cotral buses from Rome Saxa Rubra toward Viterbo (stop at Sutri) or FL3 train to Capranica–Sutri and then shuttle/bus to the town.

Practical tips

  • Arrive in the morning to find parking and enjoy the installations; the market usually opens at 10:00.
  • Check event times in advance: many activities are weekend-specific and have scheduled slots.
  • Include the Archaeological Park in your visit even if the main reason is the floral displays.
  • For a slow travel experience, consider staying in a nearby agritourism accommodation in the Tuscia countryside.

Who should attend

  • Families: children’s labs and family-friendly events.
  • Couples: tastings and garden lunches for romantic outings.
  • Food lovers: the May 16–17 weekend and the May 31 closing day focus on local cuisine.
